Before you throw a lot of money down the drain, you should know the basics about how to make hip hop beats. Here's a quick rundown to help you get started.

There's a lot that goes into creating a great hip hop tune, and there's plenty of inspiration to be found in the last 20 years of hip hop history. There's a DVD on Amazon called Beat Kings: The History of Hip Hop that my nephew loved. He said there were stories about Jay-Z, Kanye, Trackmasters, DJ Premier and RZA...and a whole bunch of other legends in the business, talking about their lives in the music, doing things they love, with some behind the scenes kind of thing, how they make their records, so newbies like my boys can have a peek at the lives of those who've really made it. Who wants to read a whole bunch of stuff nowadays anyway, right. Well, actually, I have one nephew who hates books and another who loves them. I've seen one of them nose deep in Making Beats: The Art of Sample-Based Hip-Hop (Music Culture) and his beats and rhymes have sure gotten better since  then. 

Like I keep telling those boys. If your beats don't move the crowd, then you got nuthin. And hip hop is nothing without that foundation of beat that gets people moving and bobbing on the floor. If the beat sucks, well... we've all been there before. Like some funny smell suddenly got people to stop and fade off the floor. Think about the last time something infectious really caught you and pulled you to your feet. Your head couldn't help bobbin, right? And I bet your body couldn't stop moving either. That's what it's all about, and I've heard that many great artists hear beats in their heads and dance to them way before they ever even touch a drum machine to knock out their grooves.

There's a lot of other stuff to great hip hop too. You need a solid bass line that works with your beat, and then you throw some effects in. Try this, try that, see what works and what dopin kind of vibe you can come up with.
